On October 26, 2024, with the sun shining brightly and a gentle breeze in the air, the vibrant colors of autumn came into full view. In this enchanting golden season, the Fudan University Alumni Association of Greater Washington, D.C., in collaboration with the Zhejiang University Alumni Association, successfully hosted the Old Rag Hiking and Fall Foliage Event.
Nearly 60 participants from all walks of life gathered at the foot of Old Rag Mountain around 9:30 a.m., traveling from various parts of Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, D.C. Due to the large group size, we organized into three teams: “Trailblazers,” “Steadfast Pillars,” and “Leisurely Strollers.” Under the leadership of their respective team leaders, the groups set off on their grand hiking adventure.
Along the way, the breathtaking scenery accompanied lively conversations as participants climbed the mountain, sharing life stories and exchanging experiences. Everywhere they passed was filled with laughter and joy.
The Old Rag Trail is one of the most popular yet most challenging hiking routes in the DMV area. Located in the beautiful Shenandoah National Park, the trail spans nearly 10 miles. The initial portion features relatively flat and easy paths, but as hikers reach the midsection, rugged and jagged rocks begin to appear. Many sections are quite steep, often requiring both hands and feet to navigate, posing a significant test of physical strength and endurance for all participants.
However, none of this dampened the group’s morale or enthusiasm. Everyone supported one another along the way, with the gentlemen especially demonstrating their chivalry by assisting those who needed help climbing the steeper sections. In the end, every participant successfully reached the summit.
Upon reaching the summit, everyone was captivated by the breathtaking view of the rolling mountains blanketed in vibrant autumn colors stretching into the distance. Standing atop the towering boulders and gazing down upon the vast landscape, a profound sense of grandeur and triumph filled the air — as if embracing the majesty of nature with an exhilarating feeling of "Who but us could conquer such heights?"
The descent was much gentler, giving everyone more time to appreciate the scenery along the way. Compared to the challenging ascent, the downward trail offered a different kind of beauty: towering trees stretched toward the sky, bathed in the golden glow of the setting sun, painting a vivid, poetic landscape. It was a scene of breathtaking romance, like walking through a living masterpiece.
By around five or six in the evening, everyone gradually made their way back to the foot of the mountain. Although there were a few minor incidents along the way, all participants ultimately reunited safely at the base. Many then continued the joyful day by gathering at a restaurant to enjoy a hearty meal together, bringing the Old Rag Hiking and Fall Foliage Trip to a perfect and satisfying close.
